Chasing Creaks in Chinese Carbon

So is it the wheel or the frame? The Light-Bicycle Rep requested a video if possible, a terrific idea since its sorta what I do everyday for a living (video tape failing products in the field).

I bolted Z's Sony Action Cam to the seat post and rode on over to Chabot Road nearby in Oakland as my representative hill.

Take a look at the 3 videos  have posted here

I noticed *a lot* of flex and creaks timed to the flex. Let me know what you think.

In the name of science, I moved the wheels to the cyclocross frame.

The single speed really spun out on the flats, and the bike felt really light weight...

They seem quite solid, I might take the bike up the hill for donut Friday to find out for real.
The big question is, do I bother replacing the frame or just build a super CX with a set of carbon road wheels?

  1. This is very interesting (thanks for adding the comment to my post). A couple of question: what is your BB (BSA? BB30?). From the video the flex doesn't seem much greater than flex on my FM166, but I know some BBs creak a lot -- perhaps that is the issue? Also, does it seem like creaking could be coming form headset? I have issues with my headset working loose on my bike; I think I am going to try a stem with more steerer tube surface area. This creaks a lot when loose, but mostly when braking. Agreed that it doesn't sound like a wheel creak noise.

Finally, I assume you looked over the frame for any cracks, etc? Probably in BB area / near chainstays, if I had to guess. I've never broken a carbon frame, though, so not sure how that manifests itself. I've broken a few metal frames and they tend to feel pretty wiggly, so you might notice that by feel even more than sound.
